Pamukkale, meaning "cotton castle" in Turkish, is a natural site in Denizli Province in southwestern Turkey. It is famous for its white terraces of travertine, a carbonate mineral left by the flowing water. Among its most significant structures are the well-preserved Roman theatre, the Temple of Apollo, and the large necropolis. The hot springs of Hierapolis were believed to have healing properties, attracting many visitors throughout history.
