Photosynthesis is the process by which green plants and some other organisms use sunlight to synthesize nutrients from carbon dioxide and water. In plants, this process primarily occurs in the leaves, within organelles called chloroplasts. Chloroplasts contain a pigment called chlorophyll, which absorbs sunlight. The energy from sunlight is then used to convert carbon dioxide and water into glucose (a type of sugar) and oxygen. This oxygen is then released into the atmosphere, which is vital for animals and humans to breathe.
