Tsunamis are a series of powerful ocean waves caused by large-scale disturbances, most commonly underwater earthquakes. Volcanic eruptions, landslides, or even meteor impacts can also generate tsunamis. These waves can travel across entire oceans at great speeds, sometimes as fast as a jet plane. As they approach shallow coastal waters, they grow in height and can cause devastating floods and destruction when they hit land. People living in coastal areas should be aware of tsunami warning signs, such as a sudden drop or rise in sea level, and evacuate immediately if a warning is issued.
